CRS maintain an extensive data base mainly but not exclusively of residents of the Singleton - Patrick's Plains area of the Hunter Valley. These records have been collated from parish records, newspapers and postal directories. As well records of  applications for land as well as the census of land holders and stock are also available for purchase and / or 'look ups'.

Singleton & District Post Office and Country Directories. (Ref: SPO-cd1)            Price: CD $23.00 post free

 

This listing of residents of Singleton and surrounding district consists of a index of over 6500 entries transcribed from local postal directories which have been grouped by surname, first name / initial and then by year of entry. The index also lists the address of the resident and in most cases the occupation. The data was obtained from the following directories:-

1832 Country Gazette - Patrick's Plains extracts;

1878/79 PO Directories - Anvil Creek, Belford, Branxton, Bridgeman,

Elderslie, Fordwich, Glendon Brook, Goorangoola, Jerry's Plains,

Muswellbrook, Singleton, Scott's Flat, Sedgefield, St. Clair, Ravensworth,

Wollombi, Westbrook and Warkworth.

1884 PO Directories - Patrick's Plains Land District, Belford, Bowman's

Creek, Branxton, Bridgeman, Camberwell, Glendon Brook, Glenoak, Glennie's

Creek, Goorangoola, Gresford, Jerry's Plains, Johnson's Creek, Mitchell's

Flat, Ravensworth, Rix's Creek, Scott's Flat, St Clair, Sedgefield,

The extract contains the police district of Singleton section of the census of landholders taken in 1884. The census provides the names of 740 occupiers of land, the name of the holding, the postal town of the landholding, acreage and the number of cattle, horses, sheep, and pigs.

 An index of the names of 976 residents mentioned in the 1926 souvenir publication ‘Back to Singleton’. In the case of most entries the index provides some biographical material. The publication itself is available at most libraries and is invaluable reference.

 

Singleton Residents compiled from  miscellaneous sources Volume 1 (Ref: SR-cd4)          Price: $23.00 post free

 

A compendium of over 4000 names compiled from the following:-

Singleton Times, Singleton Budget, Singleton Argus, Maitland Mercury, Hunter River Gazette, Freeman’s Journal. The Muster of 1837, the 1828 Census and the Government Gazette. The criteria for inclusion in the index being mention or a connection to Singleton, Patrick’s Plains and district. The entries are sorted by surname and contain where stated occupation, residence and notes regarding the actual entry. Also included are the references for the data. The entries are in the main taken from the newspapers of the day but in those cases where there is also information from the census and/or the general return of convicts the methodology raises interesting possibilities particularly for those researching the socio-economic mobility of their convict ancestors.

In 1848,1849 and 1850 the Government Gazette published the names of applicants for leasehold in the then pastoral districts of Bligh, Clarence River, Darling Downs, Gwydir, Lachlan, Liverpool Plains, Lower Darling, Macleay River, Maneroo, Moreton Bay, Murrumbidgee, New England and Wellington.

 

This listing of over 1500 persons sorted by surname contains the name of the run, the pastoral district and the owner of adjoining runs where stated. Also includes details of the run such as acreage, carrying capacity for sheep and cattle the location and in some cases a brief description of the run.  Whilst sorted by applicant surname, the neighbours names can also be searched, thus providing a further 1000 entries.


Beyond the Limits. Landholders & Caveats 1849  (Ref: LAND-cd6)    Price; $13.00 post free

 

During 1848 and 1849 the Crown Lands Office received over 600 caveats against claims to leases of Crown land beyond the Settled Districts. These have been collated and sorted alphabetically by the name of the applicants. The list contain applicant name,  the district , the name of the run applied for and the name of the party lodging caveat against the issue of such lease. The listing provides an interesting perspective of claims and counter claims.

 

Pasturage Licenses 1837  (Ref. LAND-cd8)

During 1837 the Government Gazette published the names of ‘Individuals who (had)...obtained Licenses from the Colonial Treasurer for Depasturing Stock beyond the boundaries of the Colony’. These names have been collated and indexed. The index contains name and residence, the situation and district applied for.

In 1848 the NSW Government Gazette republished from the Port Phillip Government Gazette the names of applicants for leasehold in various pastoral districts. Those districts which have been collated to date are Wimmera, Murray, Gipps, Portland Bay , Grant, and Western Port.

 

This listing sorted by surname contains the name of the run, the pastoral district and the owner of adjoining runs where stated. Also includes details of the run such as acreage, carrying capacity for sheep and cattle the location and in some cases a brief description of the run. 

 

Mineworker Fatalities . Northern District. 1847 to 1938.  (Ref: MINE-cd7)

Over 1000 mineworkers died as a result of accidents between 1847 and 1938. This index contains names, age occupation, date of accident, and name of mine, mine location, details of the accident, and references for the data. The data has been sourced from newspapers, Department of Mine reports and selected secondary sources.
